WELCOME TO THE PRACTICE
Brief History Of The Practice
Prior to 1946, the practice was run by Dr Hunt from 144 London Road with a branch surgery at 13 Derby Road. Dr Tom Fyfe then took over and ran it single-handed until November 1947 when he was joined by Dr William Murray.
The branch surgery was, by then, closed and the practice was run from Dr Fyfe's house at 144 London Road.
The accommodation left a lot to be desired and the ancillary staff consisted of two part-time secretaries! The onus then fell on the doctors' wives as there was no such thing as a deputising service; the practice was on-call every night.
1948 saw the start of the health service and the number of patients on the practice list was a mere 2,150. Dr Alex McKenzie joined as an assistant but did not stay. It was not until 1963 when Dr Paddy Dymoke joined the practice that we had any professional help.
Practice management was taken over by Mrs Sheila Selby who retired in 1982 and was succeeded by Mrs Yvonne Howard. Mrs Howard retired in 2000 and her successor is Mr Philip Mellis who took over on 29th March 2000. In 1966 Dr Paula Lees joined the practice, and in 1968 when Dr Fyfe suddenly decided to retire and sell 144 London Road, we moved to 97 London Road.
Dr Duncan Macnair joined the practice in 1968 and it was at this time that we had a full reception staff. We then set up a shared on-call rota with another local practice which ran successfully for several years.
Dr Nick Jones joined the practice in 1977, followed by Dr Martin Talbot. He was succeeded by Dr Garvin Falkus (who is now senior partner) in 1978. Dr William Murray retired in 1983 after 35 years with the practice, and was replaced by Dr Nicholas Taylor. Dr Duncan Macnair took over as senior partner in 1983. Dr Paula Lees retired in 1990 and was replaced by Dr Karen Carr.
Sadly, due to ill health, Dr Duncan Macnair retired as senior partner in 1993.
Dr Iain Jarvis joined the practice in 1994.
